The Wellness Benefit in Sweden and Yoga: Does Corporate Yoga Count as Friskvårdsbidrag?

If you run HR or finance for a team in Stockholm, the wellness benefit in Sweden, friskvårdsbidrag, comes up the moment anyone suggests yoga. The question I hear most is whether corporate yoga can be paid for out of the team's wellness allowance. The honest answer is that there are two completely separate routes, and choosing the right one up front makes both the bookkeeping and the turnout easier. Here is the difference, what actually qualifies, and how it works in practice.

Two routes: the individual allowance or company-paid wellness

Friskvårdsbidrag is money an employer offers each employee to spend on a wellness activity of their own choosing. The employee pays, keeps the receipt and gets reimbursed. The tax-free ceiling is 5,000 SEK per employee per calendar year.

Corporate yoga works the other way round. The company buys the class as a service and everyone on the team can join. It is a staff wellness benefit (personalvårdsförmån) and a company cost, not an allowance paid to individuals, so there is no 5,000 SEK per-person ceiling to track.

So the short answer: corporate yoga that you book and pay for as a company is not friskvårdsbidrag. It is company-paid staff wellness. Most of my corporate clients do it this way, because the admin is lighter and because turnout looks completely different when the class is already booked and paid for.

Does yoga qualify as a wellness activity?

Yes. Yoga counts as an approved wellness activity under Swedish tax practice, because it contains an element of physical exercise. That holds whether the class runs in a studio, at home or online. One thing worth knowing if you are new to the system: since 2024 there is no fixed list of approved activities held by Skatteverket. It is the employer who decides what qualifies, based on established practice. In other words, your HR or finance lead sets the policy, not a government list.

There is also no registration or accreditation a yoga teacher needs in order for the activity to count. It is the activity that decides, not the teacher's paperwork. So you do not need to hunt for a provider who appears on some approved register.

    What qualifies

    • Group classes and drop-in yoga.
    • Private sessions, one to one or in a small group.
    • Yoga online, live on Teams or Zoom, from home or anywhere else.
    • Class cards and term passes at a studio.

    What does not

    • Event yoga such as a bachelorette, a wedding or a birthday. That is a private purchase, not a staff wellness benefit.
    • Equipment. Mats, clothing and props are not covered.
    • Retreats and trips where accommodation and food are the main cost.

One detail that trips people up: the 1,000 SEK per occasion limit applies to wellness without an exercise element, massage being the classic example. Yoga has an exercise element, so a single private session can cost more than that and still qualify.

How the receipt process works for an employee

If someone on the team wants to spend their own allowance on yoga, the flow is simple. They book and pay, I give them a receipt, and they submit it to the employer following your internal routine. The receipt should show what the activity was, when it took place, what it cost including VAT, and who provided it. A personal identity number is not required by Skatteverket, although some employers ask for one anyway.

If you use a wellness portal such as Epassi, Benify or Wellnet, that is a payment convenience rather than a requirement. Direct invoicing works just as well. And if an individual wants to use their allowance on their own, they can book private yoga in the normal way.

Common mistakes that make the benefit taxable

    • Going over 5,000 SEK. The rule is all or nothing: one krona over and the entire amount becomes taxable for the employee, not just the excess.
    • Offering wellness to some people and not others. A staff wellness benefit has to be available to the whole workforce to stay tax free.
    • Mixing the two routes in the accounts and claiming the same cost twice.
    • Counting event yoga or a team party with a yoga segment as wellness. Lovely, but not wellness.

None of this is complicated, but it is far easier to decide which route you are taking before you book than to untangle it afterwards. Ask your finance lead early.

    How to get started

If you want yoga to actually happen, rather than sit as a line item in a benefits portal, recurring corporate yoga is the route that works. A fixed slot in the calendar does more for a team than an allowance a third of them get round to using.

    • We start with a short call about what the team needs and what their week actually looks like.
    • We pick a format: on site with you, live on Teams, or a mix for hybrid teams.
    • We set a time and frequency, usually the same slot each week so it becomes a habit.
    • You get one invoice per period and I run the classes. No mats or changing needed for the shorter formats.

Classes are calm and accessible. No advanced poses, no performance pressure, and nothing that assumes anyone is fit or has done yoga before. If someone wants to stay in their chair, they stay in their chair. That is not the lesser version, that is the point.

Can we pay for corporate yoga with our employees' friskvårdsbidrag?+
You can, if the class is billed per participant and each person pays and submits a receipt. But most companies instead buy the class as a service and book it as staff wellness. That removes the receipt admin and lets everyone on the team join.
Does yoga count as a wellness activity in Sweden?+
Yes. Yoga qualifies because it contains an element of physical exercise. Since 2024 there is no fixed list of approved activities, so the employer decides what qualifies based on established practice.
How much is the wellness benefit in 2026?+
Up to 5,000 SEK per employee per calendar year, tax free. The rule is all or nothing: if the amount goes over the limit, the whole sum becomes taxable for the employee, not only the excess.
Does online yoga over Teams qualify?+
Yes. Internet-based training programmes such as yoga are explicitly included, and it makes no difference whether the employee joins from home or from the office.
Does the yoga teacher need to be registered or approved?+
No. There is no register or approved list to appear on. Whether something counts is decided by the activity and its cost, not by the teacher's credentials.
What language are the classes taught in?+
Classes are taught in English, which works well for international teams in Stockholm. I am Australian and live in Stockholm, so an English-speaking teacher is exactly what you get.
